International Trade and Investment Law

Administrative Law

Municipal Law

Corporate & Commercial Law

Alex’s area of practice includes international trade and investment law, administrative law, municipal law, and civil and commercial litigation. Alex has experience representing clients in complex high-stakes disputes before the federal courts of Canada, domestic and international tribunals, and government decision-makers such as the Canada Border Services Agency. He has also counselled public and private clients on a wide manner of international trade and procurement law issues under federal legislation and several of Canada’s trade and investment agreements.

Prior to joining the partnership at Daniel & Partners, Alex worked for a distinguished international law firm. While there, Alex advised governments, trade associations, and large multinational corporations on complex domestic and international economic law issues, including government-to-government dispute settlement, cross-border trade issues, competition law compliance, government procurement and contracting disputes, investor-state disputes, and compliance with Canada’s sanctions regime. Alex has also appeared on behalf of several of Canada’s largest manufacturing companies in highly consequential litigation and was listed counsel of record on nearly half of all trade remedies matters heard before the Canadian International Trade Tribunal between 2020 and 2023.

Born and raised in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Alex graduated first-class from Brock University with a Bachelor of Arts with Honours in 2016. He then received his Juris Doctor degree from the University of Ottawa, which he completed jointly with his master’s degree in international economic policy from the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs. During his legal studies, Alex served as an analyst at an agency of the Canadian Department of Finance, working on matters relevant to Canadian national security, and interned with the Treaty Law Bureau of Global Affairs Canada, where he focused on the provisional application of treaties. Upon graduating from law school with cum laude distinction, Alex received dean’s honours and the Gowling WLG award for the highest standing in international trade law.

A proponent and practitioner of international law, Alex has acted as a delegatory assistant at the United Nations International Law Commission in Geneva, Switzerland, and volunteers annually as a judge in the Canadian national rounds of the Phillip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition in Ottawa. During the year, Alex provides guest lectures on international law and policy to undergraduate students at Brock University and is the founder of Brock University’s Model United Nations team, which competes annually in New York against universities from across the world. In his free time, Alex enjoys playing tennis and golfing with friends.
