As we approach Remembrance Day, we pause to remember the service of Gino DeLazzari, cherished grandfather of our associate, Joseph A. DeLazzari.
Gino was drafted in July 1943 under the National Resources Mobilization Act, 1940 (NRMA) and enlisted for service in August 1943.
Before he was drafted, Gino was completing an apprenticeship as a mechanic in St. Davids. After enlistment, Gino trained as a motor mechanic with the Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers and became qualified to repair and maintain tanks and other mechanized vehicles.
Gino was one of the 13,000 men conscripted under the NRMA to be sent overseas. In May 1945, Gino embarked for North-Western Europe, and after serving in post-war occupied Europe, he returned home in April 1946.
Gino seldomly spoke about his experiences, but he did share one memorable story. He recalled being in a bar in northern Germany after the German surrender. Among the many servicemen celebrating, Gino unexpectedly ran into his uncle. They spent the rest of the night reminiscing and catching up, a rare and cherished moment of connection amidst the chaos of war.
Upon returning home, Gino became a proud and dedicated member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 17 in Thorold. Today, his son and grandson continue to honour this tradition, preserving his legacy of service and commitment.
Thank you for your service, Gino. You will always be remembered.
