With Remembrance Day approaching, we are proud to honour Flying Officer Douglas Taylor of the Royal Canadian Air Force, the maternal grandfather of our partner, Brandon Boone.
“Doug” served on active service from July 8, 1941, until honourable release on September 23, 1945. He completed a 36 sortie operational tour as an Air Gunner at Royal Air Force Station Wickenby, Squadron 626 (Flying Sixes), from September 16, 1944, to April 3, 1945.
Among other things, Doug engaged in combat with a Junkers JU 88 over Saarbrucken, Germany, on October 5, 1944, and a Focke-Wulf FW 190 over Duisburg, Germany, only 9 days later. His turret was damaged in heavy flak over Hanover, Germany, on March 25, 1945. Upon completion of his operational tour, he served as an instructor in the Royal Air Force Operational Training Unit No. 24 from May to June, 1945.
Doug was awarded the 1939-1945 Star, the France and Germany Star, the Defence Medal, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Bomber Command Bar and clasp for overseas service, the War Medal 1939-1945 and the Royal Canadian Air Force Operations Badge. Upon returning home, he served as a 5 term president of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 479, in Niagara Falls. He passed away in his 94th year, in 2013.
We remember you and thank you for your service, Doug!
