Honouring the Legacy of Harold Raymond Dilts: A Soldier, a Father, and a Hero

September 10, 2025

As Remembrance Day approaches, we at Daniel & Partners LLP pay tribute to the remarkable life and service of Harold Raymond Dilts, a dedicated soldier and beloved father of our partner, Rick Dilts. As we reflect on the bravery and sacrifices of those who served our country, we remember Harold’s contributions with deep gratitude.

Harold Dilts’ life was marked by a profound commitment to Canada and an enduring spirit of resilience. Enlisting in the Canadian Army on November 22, 1940, Harold completed Basic Training and was transferred to the 19th Field Regiment, Royal Canadian Artillery – 55th Battery, where he was assigned to Camp Borden as an RCA Rank Gunner.

Between June and August of 1942, Harold was promoted to an Acting Lance Bombardier, then an Acting Bombardier, eventually transferring to Camp Petawawa on November 17, 1942. Upon being called to duty, Harold left Halifax on July 21, 1943 aboard the RMS Queen Elizabeth, arriving at Greenock, Scotland to prepare for combat.

June 6, 1944, better known as D-Day, changed the course of World War II and the future of both Canada and the world as we know it today. Along with 14,000 Canadians and 8,000 British troops, Harold and the 19th Field Regiment stormed Juno Beach to commence the final great assault on Nazi Germany. The Allies suffered 1,074 casualties, of which 359 were killed.

Harold was injured on D-Day as a result of a mortar bomb explosion. Remarkably, he survived and was sent to England to recuperate. While in a London hospital, Harold met Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, who said to him “it must have been terrible.” Harold was present on May 8, 1945 for Victory in Europe Day, which marked the formal acceptance by the Allies of Nazi Germany’s unconditional surrender of its armed forces.

Harold demonstrated courage and integrity in the face of adversity, embodying the values that continue to inspire generations of Canadians. His time in uniform was a testament to his dedication to protecting our freedoms and his unyielding support for his fellow soldiers.

Beyond his military service, Harold was a kind and devoted family man who instilled in his children values of respect, perseverance, and compassion. Rick, one of our cherished team members, reflects Harold’s legacy in his own work and in his dedication to our community – a living reminder of the values Harold held dear.

As we honour Harold’s memory and celebrate his service, we are reminded of the countless men and women like him who have given so much for the peace and security we enjoy today. This Remembrance Day, let us reflect on Harold’s story and the stories of all those who served, pledging to keep their memory alive through our own actions and commitment to Canada’s future.

Thank you, Harold, for your service and sacrifice. You are remembered, honoured, and missed.
